Unicode strikethrough text uses a combining character (U+0336) that draws a horizontal line through each letter. Unlike HTML strikethrough tags, which only work inside a web page, a Unicode combining mark is part of the text string. The crossed out appearance is preserved when you copy and paste it into social media posts, messaging apps, emails, or anywhere else that supports Unicode.

Each character in the output is two code points: the letter you typed, followed by the invisible overlay that draws the line. The text is not wrapped in anything, so there is no prefix or suffix to strip, and the effect works on a single word just as well as on a whole paragraph.

Not with Unicode. There is no combining double stroke overlay, so the only way to fake one is to apply U+0336 twice to every character, and both strokes land on the same baseline in almost every font. The result is indistinguishable from ordinary strikethrough while costing an extra code point per character, so this tool does not offer it as a style. A word processor or any editor with real formatting is the right tool when you need a genuine double line.

People mean one of two things by straight strikethrough. The first is a straight horizontal line as opposed to a diagonal one. The Strikethrough style produces the horizontal form with U+0336, while Slash Through (U+0337) and Long Slash (U+0338) cut each character at an angle instead.

The second meaning is a straight, continuous line as opposed to a broken one. The Short Stroke style uses U+0335, which crosses each glyph but stops before the next, so gaps appear between letters and the line looks dashed.

A third overlay sits outside both readings. Wavy Strikethrough uses the combining tilde overlay (U+0334), which draws a rippled line rather than a flat one.

The long stroke overlay in the first style gives the continuous line most people are looking for. Whichever variant you pick, the output is still plain Unicode and copies the same way.

Use the copy button next to the output, or select the crossed out text and copy it with Ctrl+C or Cmd+C. Paste it into any text field with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. No formatting is attached, so the line survives pasting into fields that strip rich text.

A few things to expect when you paste:

• Character counters count the overlays. Strikethrough text costs roughly twice its visible length, so it hits a post or bio limit twice as fast.
• Fields that only accept a restricted character set, such as usernames, email addresses, and URLs, will usually reject it.
• Site search and hashtags will not match crossed out words, because the stored text no longer matches what a reader sees.
• Screen readers handle combining marks unpredictably. Keep anything that has to be understood in plain text.
• The exact position and thickness of the line depend on the font, so the same text can look slightly different across devices.

Yes, and WhatsApp also has strikethrough of its own. Inside a message you can wrap text in single tildes, ~like this~, or select it and pick strikethrough from the formatting menu. That is the better option for message text because it stays readable and searchable.

Unicode strikethrough is for the places WhatsApp formatting does not reach: group subjects and descriptions, your profile name, your About text, and broadcast list names. Paste the generated text into those fields and the line stays.

There is one practical difference. WhatsApp formatting is a WhatsApp feature, so it disappears if the text is copied somewhere else. Unicode strikethrough is part of the characters, so it survives being quoted, forwarded, or pasted into another app.

Instagram has no strikethrough formatting anywhere: not in captions, comments, your bio, DMs, or Notes. Unicode strikethrough is the only way to cross out text there, and it works in all of those places.

Generate the text here, copy it, and paste it in. Two caveats are worth knowing. The mobile app sometimes drops combining marks when you paste into the bio field, so if the line does not appear, paste again or edit your bio from a desktop browser instead. And because the overlays count toward the 2,200 character caption limit, a fully crossed out caption uses about half the room a plain one would.

Crossed out words also will not be picked up by Instagram search or matched as hashtags, so keep anything you want found in normal text.

Discord supports Markdown in messages, so ~~text~~ renders as strikethrough natively. Use that inside messages where you can: it is readable, it is searchable, and it works properly with screen readers.

Unicode strikethrough covers everything Markdown does not apply to. That includes your global display name, your per-server nickname, your custom status, server names, and forum post titles. Paste the generated text into those fields and the line renders.

Channel and category names are the exception to watch. Discord lowercases them and strips characters it does not allow, so combining marks may not survive there. Test it on a channel you can rename back before using it on a live one.

Facebook has no built-in strikethrough in posts, comments, or Messenger, so Unicode is the way to do it. Paste crossed out text into a status update, a comment, a Messenger message, or a Page description and it displays as expected.

Personal profile name fields are the main exception. Facebook restricts them to a standard character set and will reject text carrying combining marks. Page names and bios are more permissive but still filtered, so check that the line appears after you save.

As on other platforms, crossed out text is not matched by Facebook search, and the line sits slightly high or low in some Android font stacks. Preview a post before publishing it if the exact look matters.

Snapchat has no strikethrough formatting of its own, so Unicode is again the only option. It works in chat messages, and in your display name and bio, which is where most people want it.

The caption tool you type directly onto a snap is different. It renders text with its own font handling rather than the standard system text stack, and combining marks are not reliably drawn there. Some builds show the line, some show the letters without it, and some leave a visible gap.

Send a snap to yourself first if you plan to use crossed out text on an image. Chat messages and profile fields are the dependable places.

HTML strikethrough uses an element such as <del> and lets the browser draw a line through the rendered text. It is the correct choice on a web page you control, because the words underneath stay intact and assistive technology can announce the change. It only exists inside HTML, though, so it is stripped the moment the text is copied into a plain text field.

Unicode strikethrough puts a combining mark after every character, so the line is stored in the text itself. That is what makes it survive a copy and paste into Twitter/X, Instagram, or Discord. The tradeoff is that the underlying string is no longer plain, which affects character counts, search, and screen readers.

The combining long stroke overlay can be applied to almost any Unicode character, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols from other scripts. The visual result depends on the font. Standard Latin letters and digits come out cleanly, while wide CJK characters and emoji often show a line that is too short, misaligned, or missing altogether, because the overlay is sized for a narrow glyph. The effect is most reliable with standard Latin text.

Strikethrough marks corrections, flags information that is out of date, or signals a joke by crossing out what someone was going to say. In documents and changelogs it shows what was revised without deleting it, so readers can still see what changed. On social media it is mostly used for the comic effect, which is why the demand for it is highest on the platforms that provide no formatting controls of their own.
