Underline Text Generator

This underline text generator adds a line under each character using the Unicode combining low line (U+0332). Type or paste text into the input box and the underlined version appears below it in real time. The underline is part of the text string itself, so you can copy it into posts, bios, chat messages, and documents where normal formatting buttons are missing.

Because the effect is a combining mark rather than HTML or CSS, it survives paste into apps that strip rich text. For related styles, see the strikethrough text generator, the bold text generator, and the italic text generator.

How do I underline text?

Type or paste your text into the input box. The underlined result appears below automatically. Copy it with the button next to the output, then paste it wherever you need it.

Each character in the output is followed by the combining low line. Spaces are underlined too, so the line runs through the gaps between words.

Where can I use underlined Unicode text?

Underlined Unicode text works on most platforms that support Unicode characters, including social media sites like Facebook, X (Twitter), and Instagram, as well as messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Because the underline is a combining character rather than HTML or CSS formatting, the text keeps its underline when pasted into any text field. That makes it useful for emphasizing key points in posts, highlighting details in bios, or drawing attention to specific words in comments and messages. You can also combine it with other Unicode formatting such as bold text or strikethrough text for layered emphasis.

What is the difference between Unicode underline and HTML underline?

HTML underline uses an element such as <u> and lets the browser draw the line. It is the right choice on a page you control, because the words stay intact and assistive technology can announce the change. It only exists inside HTML, so it is stripped when the text is copied into a plain text field.

Unicode underline puts a combining mark after every character, so the line is stored in the text itself. That is what makes it survive a copy and paste into Instagram, Discord, or WhatsApp. The tradeoff is that the underlying string is no longer plain, which affects character counts, search, and screen readers.
